The Tinkerer's Workshop / Redirects from the Ink Outbreak box
« on: July 18, 2014, 09:11:44 PM »
Just wanted to throw up a warning here-- the Ink Outbreak rotation box has been causing comics that use it to redirect to other sites, at least some of which are porn. If anyone is still running Ink on their site after the last debacle, it would be wise to remove it now.

The Scriptorium / writing a good short story
« on: February 23, 2013, 07:22:03 PM »
With all the anthology talk going around, I'm curious how other people approach short stories!
How do you establish your characters, setting, and plot, while keeping things concise enough to wrap up within 24 pages or less?
Do you approach a short story differently from longer ones?

Webcomic Talk and Squee / Why Webcomics?
« on: July 12, 2012, 03:37:02 PM »
Just curious, what led you to choose webcomics over other creative media?

For me, it was a combination of enjoying longform comics and realising that my prose was really terrible-- ever since I can remember I wanted to be a novelist, but as I gained more ability to think critically about writing I realised my own was pretty sub-par, and visual storytelling was easier for me to learn than prose.

The Artist's Studio / Unconventional Media Use
« on: July 07, 2012, 07:38:33 PM »
Does anyone have techniques for using media/tools in nonconventional ways? (In another topic, painting with copic refills came up and I thought it was really interesting, but it was a bit off-topic, so I thought I'd start a new thread for talking about these things. c: )

What unusual techniques do you use, or have you seen any that other artists use that you'd like to try?

The Academy / What should you have before starting a new comic?
« on: June 05, 2012, 02:00:33 PM »
Thought this topic would make a nice resource for new comickers!

So, to all existing creators: How much did you prepare before you started posting pages? Is there anything you would want to do differently if you did it again? Any advice you'd give to new comickers? Links to off-site advice are also good!

(I know we've had a few similar threads but it's nice to have everything in one place. C: )

The Scriptorium / Buffers!
« on: April 09, 2012, 11:58:55 PM »
How many of you make a habit of buffering pages? For those who do, how do you motivate yourself to create pages so far in advance of the publication date?
(I keep meaning to make one but I'm busy enough with other things that it's waaayyy too easy to put off making pages until the day they are supposed to go up... and with a thrice-weekly schedule it's easy to burn through a buffer really fast.)

The Artist's Studio / Drawing Ladies
« on: March 26, 2012, 02:13:59 AM »
Here's another boob thread, since we can't ever manage to stay on-topic in the existing ones.

I'm terrible at drawing boobs, they just never look right, so I end up either making my female characters very small-boobed, putting them in really baggy clothes, or making them cross-dressers (and sometimes all of these at once). Anyone care to share your boob-drawing tips?

(Also, how do I make a character look like a girl without having her boobs showing to indicate that she's not a dude? All of my characters get mistaken for men, even the ones who are supposed to look feminine.... I understand why it's hard for me but I still want to fix it.)

The Tavern / Bra Fitting
« on: March 24, 2012, 07:23:28 PM »
I was surprised when I learned bra fittings were actually a Thing... it's just underwear, right?

Webcomic Talk and Squee / first webcomics?
« on: March 09, 2012, 03:28:46 AM »
What was the first (longform) webcomic you ever read?

Mine was Lackadaisy Cats-- I didn't even know webcomics were a Thing at the time.

The Artist's Studio / Sai?
« on: March 05, 2012, 09:30:50 PM »
The main program I use is Sai, but I'm really not very good at it. I was wondering if anyone could give me a few tips? (Specifically, if you know whether there's a way to create custom brushes. I've played with settings a bit but I can't figure out how to get as much variety as others seem to have in Photoshop.)

« on: March 04, 2012, 07:28:34 PM »
Post fanart or other gifts you have received from fans here, or fanart you have drawn for other FCP comics!

SPREAD THE LOVE or something like that.

The Tavern / Character Cameos?
« on: February 29, 2012, 02:41:37 AM »
I've got some crowd scenes coming up and thought it would be fun to work in some cameos! If you have a character in your comic you'd like to volunteer, post a ref and I'll try to work them in. (Characters from another original work are fine too, as long as they're fully yours.)

I can only do human or mostly-humanish characters-- pointy ears are okay but nothing too obviously nonhuman. Odd colours aren't an issue since the comic is black and white. Costumes may be tweaked to fit if they're incongruous with the setting, but I'll keep the general idea.

(This also seems like a fun way to give crowds more depth-- I don't know about everyone else but I tend to give background characters generic samefacey features when left to my own devices. It can start to look pretty  unrealistic when only the main cast has any thought or detail put into their designs...)

The Artist's Studio / How did you choose the art style for your comic?
« on: February 24, 2012, 03:23:15 AM »
Just curious!

I feel it's important for the art to fit the mood and tone of the comic, but obviously spending a ridiculous amount of time on each page is not practical. How did you come up with a style that feels right for your comic, and how much did you factor in speed and efficiency when you chose this style?

For FM, I knew I wanted to be able to keep up with a thrice-weekly schedule, so I went with primarily greyscale and the style is a bit simplified (and I'm not terribly bothered when my brush-pen gets a bit blobby). I also cut down on time by freehanding my panels, though I'd probably do that anyway as an aesthetic choice, regardless of time.
(There are some future projects that I do plan to put more detail into; my main goal with FM was to make a comic that I wouldn't give up on, so I also wanted to do something simpler for that reason.)

The Gallery / Share your finished art! :B
« on: February 21, 2012, 09:28:12 PM »
Thought I'd make a thread corresponding to the WIP thread, but for finished works. C:

Post anything here that you're proud of, whether it's related to your comic or not!
