Your work is automatically copyrighted when you create it; you don't need to formally register it unless you intend to sue someone (and that can be done at any time). You just need to be able to prove that you are the creator.

I wouldn't recommend worrying about it.

What a coincidence, I just got my copyright certificate in the mail for the first chapter of Demon of the Underground today.  I'm a published (prose) author on the side, so I got in the habit of having to copyright my work because it's part of my contract with the publisher.  The extra protection just gives me a little more peace of mind, not just with others trying to steal from me, but in case of any false accusations against me.

Although your work is copyrighted automatically when you create it, you'd need to be able to prove when you created it in the event of a lawsuit.  Things can get complicated if you lose your online data and/or records of the date that you originally created and posted it - hard drive crash, moving to a new web server, etc..  (This happened to me on one occasion when my art was stolen by a serial offender on DA, and a class action lawsuit was organized.  I had closed my DA account AND had a hard drive failure and thus lost my proof.  Luckily had one more backup.)  Filing for copyright isn't required in order to own the copyright, but in my opinion, the only reason not to file is if you can't afford the fee.  Otherwise, why not?  For DOTU, which is currently digital only, I sent a PDF of chapter 1, and it was $35.  It's tax deductible (if you're making money from your art).  However, if you wait until the need actually arises, you might end up having to pay more in order to expedite your copyright claim, because the typical turnaround time is 3-5 months or so.  And I believe if you wait until the need arises, you can't claim statutory damages or attorney's fees in a lawsuit.

More info here, under the "copyright registration" header:

You can read more and file online at:
http://www.copyright.gov/

That being said, your question was "what's the proper way to make sure my stuff doesn't get stolen?" and unfortunately, copyrighting your work doesn't actually prevent it from being stolen.  It just gives you options for after it's stolen.  Some things you can do to reduce the chance of theft is to watermark everything you post and never post images online that are large enough to be printed clearly at a high resolution.
