Redirects from the Ink Outbreak box
« on: July 18, 2014, 09:11:44 PM »
Just wanted to throw up a warning here-- the Ink Outbreak rotation box has been causing comics that use it to redirect to other sites, at least some of which are porn. If anyone is still running Ink on their site after the last debacle, it would be wise to remove it now.

Christ.  Well, the last bit of IO nonsense got me to take the box down anyway.  What a mess.

OOF you had me worried for a moment because I have "Follower" boxes on both my sites from IO...

But I checked them both and then reread what you wrote... it's the banners that seem to be causing issues.  (Still considering removing my comics from that site however, it's not generated a lot of readership TBH)

Reading the IO Twitter, this seems to have already been resolved.

If you're having further issues you should send Brian King a message.

Whew, I'm so glad I checked here!  Thank you so much for posting about this.  I've been tearing my site apart trying to figure out what was causing the problem.

I've been considering removing my box as well, but I like being able to give traffic to those people.  I don't know how much it really gives them, though...

I had noticed a few antivirus warnings being generated by the IO box. I'll keep the it for now, but keep an eye on it.

Yeah that's the tricky thing, the IO rotation is (in theory) a good thing since it promotes other comics, and it's not something you could easily code yourself... but it's had so many problems that it's up to you whether it's worth the risk to keep it on your site.

I've been considering removing my box as well, but I like being able to give traffic to those people.  I don't know how much it really gives them, though...
I took a look at my analytics to check Ink's stats-- it's a decentish traffic source for me, but not the greatest (currently sitting at #4, about 10% of all referrals). It does appear that most of those hits are coming from the exchange box (/exchange/boxy.php) but about half of those hits bounce (the longest sessions with the highest pageview count come from /jump/comic.php, though I don't frequent ink enough to know what that is). Ink used to be my top referral source back when I first installed analytics; it seems to be slowly declining in popularity, or at least it isn't growing as fast as other sources.

But even if it were my top referral source, I'd rather lose the potential hits than see other creators sacrificing their site security just to maintain the link rotation; the fact that this happened in the first place isn't a promising sign, and you don't want your site getting flagged.

Duskglass, I think the situation is similar for me - I get good traffic from IO, but not necessarily from the exchange box.  For whatever reason, Ink is usually one of my highest referrals and always surpasses Comic Rocket by far.

I'm grateful for the traffic and will continue to support Ink Outbreak for its use as a comic reader, but I decided to take the banner exchange off my website.  I don't blame IO or hold it against them for being hacked, but it concerns me that after this whole ordeal in which many webcomic creators spent huge chunks of their time trying to figure out the source of their redirect problems, and many have explanations and apologies posted on their webcomic sites, there still does not appear to be any official announcement or warning on the Ink Outbreak website itself.  (If there is one there, it must not be easy to locate.)  It just doesn't look good to me, and I agree that security is hugely important.

The site seems to be becoming less user friendly as time goes by.  Fewer instructions on their features, fewer announcements, etc.  At the speed that Twitter feeds travel, it's just not reliable enough to be the sole source of important news like this.

Yeah.... ink's faced down bad press before, but I'm not sure how it'll come back from this. A lot of creators have had to take it down in a hurry and now will probably be reassessing whether to put it back up.

To be honest this has pretty much ensured I won't put their banner up myself (I'd been considering it for awhile, but was procrastinating on rejigging my layout to make room for it).

I went back and visited the IO main site, looking for the information people were talking about, and was unable to come across it even trolling the blog.

The place has gotten even less user friendly than I remember for creators...  I can't even find where to get the replacement code should I even DESIRE to put it back in there.

Heck I can't even find a "dis-enroll" button... should I follow through on the "I'm done with IO" thought.

iO is a nice idea with poor implementation and a generally defensive attitude to problems when they crop up. Personally (and call it sour grapes if you want to), I just got sick of making room for the banner, dealing with the problems it produced, and then always having it link to either "Two Guys and Guy," "I Am Arg," or "Zombie Roomie." More trouble than it was really worth. Others may have had a better experience than I did, but the response to my concerns was generally "If you don't like it, then get out." So I got out.

This latest round of nonsense pretty well wraps it all up as far as I'm concerned.
